Present Subjunctive

What is it?
The subjunctive is a mood, as it is the infinitive. The subjunctive mood is unrealistic, hypothetical, probable or desirable and we will understand it better if we say that this is the virtual mood, something which is above reality. This mood it does exist in English but it is not used a lot. You can also realise through these sentences that we are talking about something unrealistic “If I were you”, “God Save the Queen”, “May the force be with you”; desirable and hypothetical “I wish I could go”. We will translate these phrases in the subjunctive mood.

How does it work?
-AR                -ER/-IR
e                    a
es                  as
e                    a
emos            amos
éis                áis
en                 an

Important irregulars to take into account (all the first capital letters form DISHES!):
Dar (dé/ des/ dé/ demos/ déis/ den)
Ir (vaya/ vayas/ vaya/ vayamos/ vayáis/ vayan)
Ser (sea/ seas/ sea/ seamos/ seáis/ sean)
Haber (haya/ hayas/ haya/ hayamos/ hayáis/ hayan)
Estar (esté/ estés/ esté/ estemos/ estéis/ estén)
Saber (sepa/ sepas/ sepa/ sepamos/ sepáis/ sepan)

When do we use the present subjunctive?
WEIRDO is the word you need to remember:

This song is played by Rosana. It is a really nice song as well as really useful to be aware of the use Spanish people do of the subjunctive mood. Why do you think the singer is using so many verbs in present subjunctive? Pa' means para, Spanish singers and some people in colloquial conversations tend to do that.

Que te vaya bonito
Mis mejores deseos
Que en la vida recojas
Lo que siempre esté bueno
Que te vaya bonito
Que no te vaya mal
Y que el tiempo te deje
Quisiste ser universal
Eclipsando mis sueños
Que Dios te proteja
La celda de tu soledad
Yo me voy a plantar al campo
O a la orilla la marea
Deseo que todo te vaya de vicio
Me voy ahí te quedas
Me voy a vivir tranquila
Sin pausa pero sin prisa
Deseo que todo te vaya de lujo
No espero visitas, así que no vayas
Que pa’ ti no estoy
Yo pa’ ti no estoy… Yo
Salud amor y fortuna
Me llevo todo en orden
Salud pa’ ver, amor pa’ hacer
Fortuna pa’ olvidar tu nombre
Me marcho con las lunas
Donde el sol no se esconde
Él me abriga el infierno
Y ella enciende mis noches
Y tú quisiste ser universal
Eclipsando mil sueños
Que dios te proteja
La celda de tu soledad
Yo me voy a plantar al campo
O a la orilla la marea
Deseo que todo te vaya de vicio
Me voy ahí te quedas
Me voy a vivir tranquila
Sin pausa pero sin prisa
Deseo que todo te vaya de lujo
No espero visita, así que no vayas
Que pa’ ti no estoy
Yo pa’ ti no estoy… yo pa’ ti no estoy
Yo pa’ ti no estoy… yo pa’ ti no estoy
Te dejo todo aquello que me diste
Me llevo todo lo que vi que no quisiste
Me voy contenta, no tengo más que darte
Me llevo todo lo que vi que no cuidaste… Y
Yo pa’ ti no estoy… Yo pa’ti no estoy
Yo pa’ ti no estoy… Yo pa’ti no estoy

Presente de subjuntivo para una presentación oral

What concerns on IGCSE oral exam, if you are able to insert some nice sentences in subjunctive mood you will get good grades. So, be aware, use a wide range of time tenses and distinguish among present, past and future and, of course, try to say some phrases that must be followed by present subjunctive.

Here you have some phrases that are always followed by subjunctive:
. “Ojalá” [if only] (ojalá estuviera de vacaciones / ojalá pueda ir a la universidad)
. Expressing opinion in a negative form. That is to say, instead of saying “pienso que están tristes”, you can say the other way round: “no pienso que estén felices”. It will work with “no creer que” [I don’t relieve that], “no pensar que” [I don’t think that], “no recordar que” [I don’t remember that] and “no ver que” [I don’t see that].
. If you express doubt and probability you must use the subjunctive, too. Quizás” or “posiblemente” [may, might] can be helpful. “Quizás llegue a las 8 de la tarde” or “posiblemente Enrique quiera un pastel”.
. Condicional sentences. Si fuera él no tomaría café” [if I were him I wouldn’t drink coffee].

Es una tira cómica, así que no creo que la mujer maltrate al niño. Sin embargo, no veo que ella esté preocupada por él. Posiblemente la señora no sepa dónde está el bebé o quizás no quiera cuidarlo. Si yo fuera ella me avergonzaría tratar así a un niño.
